AURORA | State Rep. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, nearly secured the Democratic nomination for the state Senate District 29 race Saturday, March 12, with almost a two-to-one margin of delegates over fellow state Rep. Su Ryden at the Arapahoe County Democratic assembly.

Fields received 140 of the 212 votes cast at the county delegation. Ryden’s 72 votes — about 34 percent — were just enough to qualify for the June 28 primary election ballot.

“I am honored that SD-29 Democrats today showed such strong confidence in this grassroots campaign,” Fields said. “This is a people-powered campaign, and because of the grassroots movement we’ve built, we have the momentum to take my message to Democratic primary voters.”

Ryden said there are “some significant differences” between the candidates and that she is “looking forward to telling that story going forward.

“It was really exciting times at the caucus and the assembly, but after all, we still have about 28,000 voters who haven’t chimed in yet,” Ryden said. “And I’m glad we’re going to give them a chance to have a choice in the primary.”

Fields is serving her third term as state representative from House District 42. Ryden is term-limited in House District 36.

No Republican candidate has announced or filed for the Senate District 29 race yet. Arapahoe County Republicans will likely draft a candidate for the race during this weekend’s Republican county assembly.
